چکیده

Carbon management and sequestration offers an opportunity for reducing greenhouse gas emissions that can complement the current strategies of improving energy efficiency and increasing the use of non-fossil energy resources. Furthermore, this approach will enable us to continue to enjoy the benefits of fossil fuels while protecting our climate. When most people think of sequestering carbon, they think of planting trees. However, the focus of this paper is the capture of CO2 from large stationary sources and then reusing it or sequestering it in geologic formations or the deep ocean. The two biggest challenges for carbon sequestration from large stationary sources are reducing costs associated with CO2 separation and capture and developing sinks that are safe, effective, and economical. In this paper, we present results of a detailed analysis of costs associated with today’s technology for CO2 separation and capture followed by a discussion of opportunities to lower costs in the future. Then, we review the challenges involved in developing secure storage reservoirs.

پتانسیل ترسیب کربن خاک در اراضی بیابانی تحت اثر دو گونۀ تاغ و سوف (مطالعۀ موردی: آران و بیدگل)

Climate change is one of the most important challenges in sustainable development that has negative effects on the ecosystems, land and water. The main cause of this phenomenon, increasing the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere. The main method for reducing at CO2 atmosphere is increasing global carbon storage in soils, in other hand 75% total carbon stock on land has stored in soils. The s...

Advanced Instrumentation for In Situ Field Monitoring of Soil Carbon Sequestration

Atmospheric CO2 concentrations have increased considerably since the mid-1800s and are projected to increase even further during the coming century. This rapid increase in CO2 concentration corresponds with increases in the combustion of fossil fuel, changes in agricultural land use, and deforestation since the beginning of the industrial age. These observations have prompted scientists and pol...

How planting density and grazing intensity affect the above- and below-ground carbon pools in a dryland ecosystem?

Climate change is known as one of the most important environmental challenges. Sequestration of carbon in terrestrial ecosystems is a low-cost option that may be available in the near-term to mitigate increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations, while providing additional benefits. In this study, we estimated the effects of planting density and grazing intensity on the potential of Atriplex canes...

CCS-Bonds as a superior instrument to incentivize secure carbon sequestration

Geological sequestration of CO2 on a massive scale implies that large area fractions of the underground could become flooded by CO2, imposing a unprecedented regulatory challenge to environmental authorities. Therefore we propose carbon sequestration bonds as complementary, market-based instruments that should further help to manage the risk of decadal-scale CO2 leakage. Such bond schemes addre...
